Classroom Workshops & Residencies

We bring in accomplished and professional teaching artists and theatre-makers—actors, playwrights, directors, musicians—into educational settings. Using the tools of theatre—storytelling, movement, performance, writing, and ensemble-building—our process helps students and teachers engage more deeply with what they are learning and experience their academic subjects in a new light. Our workshops support curricular goals while opening up new ways for students to engage with texts, deepen reflection and dialogue in the classroom, and develop their writing. We strive to make learning immediate and personal, transforming the classroom into a space of experiential learning, community connection, and joy.

“This is transformation that happens in the moment.”

— Dr. Khuram Hussain
Associate Professor of Education Studies, Middlebury College

Professional Development

Our PD for teachers of all disciplines introduces pedagogical tools using theatre, embodiment, writing, and collaboration to invigorate students, inspire risk-taking, and build community.

Some of our current workshop models include:

  • Exploring and Enlivening Text: These workshops introduce practices teachers can bring into their own classrooms to help deepen an understanding of text. These tools aim to help students and teachers:

    • Engage with text through a personal and critical lens.

    • Inspire risk-taking and creativity in the classroom.

    • Create belonging and connection.

  • Re-Imagining the Classroom: These workshops invite teachers to experience how unlocking our creativity transforms the ways we teach, build community, and make meaning together.

    • Educators will gain new tools and knowledge drawing on theatre and creative practices that include: embodiment, storytelling, writing, and collaboration.

    • Educators will be introduced to new methods of text analysis that employ theatrical tools to help students experience language sonically, sensorially, and personally.

    • Participants will reflect on the strategies offered by The Beyond Ensemble and design a short lesson to implement in their own classroom.

“[The Beyond Ensemble] is more than a resource to classroom teachers; their residencies can transform students’ thinking, and their experience with them can last the rest of their lives.”

— Justice Graham
6th Grade English Teacher, Intermediate Preparatory Academy at the New Mexico Military Institute
